Weather Related School Closures

If school is cancelled prior to the beginning of the school day Listen to the radio (KIRO-AM 710), or tune your television to KIRO (channel 7), KOMO (channel 4), or KING (channel 5) for information about whether we will be open and at what time school will begin.  You can also check www.schoolreport.org and go to private schools and click on Children’s Institute. We will attempt to have a school closure/or schedule change notice included by 7:30 in the morning. If there is no specific announcement regarding CHILD/New Heights Schools, follow information for the Mercer Island School District.

If the Mercer Island School District has cancelled school, so have we.  If they have cancelled Kindergarten, we are closed also.  If they are running one to two hours late, we are in session and will begin at 11:00 for those who can get here.

Regardless of whether we have decided to have school, we urge you to use your own discretion as to the safety of transporting your child to school when there is snow or ice.  If you are not coming, we would like you to call and leave a message that your child will be absent.

If your child has OT, please call directly to the Developmental Therapy Services attendance line: 206-232-3588 or call 206-232-8680 ext. 214 before 8 A.M., so you will not be charged.  Hearing from you will enable OT to make adjustments in staff and schedules on days when a large number of their clients are absent.

If your child has speech therapy, please call our office as early as possible to notify us that your child will be missing a therapy appointment.

If we are in session and the roads are in poor shape early, then seem to improve, you may bring your child in up until 11:00 A.M.

If we should have to cancel school during the school day we will follow this plan if at all possible: If the power is out for an extended period of time or snow begins to stick or if any accumulations are forecast, we will dismiss school immediately. You will be called and asked to pick your child up as quickly as possible.

Our staff will wait with the children until you arrive, so we urge you to come as quickly as it is safe, so no one gets stranded. Drive carefully, and THINK SUN.
